Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering
Introduction
The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) was established at the CET Sreekariyam campus in 1964–65, beginning with an intake of just 33 students. Today it is one of the most dynamic and research-active departments in the college, known for innovation, strong placements, and an engaged student community. Electronics and Communication Engineering covers the design and application of electronic circuits, communication systems, signal processing, VLSI, and embedded systems — the technologies that power smartphones, satellites, radars, medical devices, and the internet. It is one of the most sought-after programmes at CET.
Core Subjects
The curriculum is structured to give students a firm grounding in fundamentals before moving into specialised areas. Core subjects include Analog and Digital Electronics, Signals and Systems, Electronic Circuits, Communication Theory, Electromagnetic Theory, Microprocessors and Microcontrollers, Digital Signal Processing, VLSI Design, Wireless Communications, Optical Communications, and Embedded Systems. Students also study Computer Networks and learn programming in Python, C, and MATLAB. Labs are deeply integrated with theory, ensuring that concepts are tested practically.
Faculty
The department has a large and distinguished faculty body with research expertise in signal processing, communication systems, VLSI, nanotechnology, and biomedical electronics. The department runs the Audio, Speech and Language Research Lab and has hosted multiple Faculty Development Programmes on topics like VLSI System Design, Light Wave Technologies, Nanotechnology, and ML-based Signal Processing.
Labs
The department is equipped with a rich set of laboratories. Key labs include the Digital Electronics Lab, Analog Electronics Lab, DSP Lab, Communication Lab, Microwave Lab, VLSI Design Lab, and the Embedded Systems Lab. A newly inaugurated Golden Jubilee PG & Research Block has significantly expanded research infrastructure. The department also has a dedicated Department Library.
Placement Statistics
ECE graduates from CET are placed in leading technology firms, semiconductor companies, defence research organisations, and IT companies. The department sees consistent placement of students in ISRO, DRDO, Tata Elxsi, Infosys, Wipro, TCS, and various semiconductor startups. Graduates also crack GATE to pursue M.Tech at IITs and are known to secure international admissions with high GRE scores.
Research & Achievements
The department developed the CET-Oxymonitor, a pulse oximeter, during the COVID-19 second wave and handed it over to the Kerala Health Department at a time of acute shortage. A student team also won ₹1 lakh at the CareHack hackathon for CareGame, a cognitive screening tool for children. Students regularly win university ranks and international student project awards.
Community Outreach
The CetEcGo Science Outreach Programme takes ECE student volunteers to government schools to conduct science demonstrations for school students, promoting scientific curiosity at the grassroots level. The department also participates in the THRIVE programme, mentoring tribal school students.
